Lives and Flexibility - 0.3.0-beta - Oct. 2, 2022


I'm still working away on making this game better, I've just had a little less time this month because of my day job.

Today however I uploaded some big changes to the experimental branch: https://newbeings.itch.io/order-automatica-beta

0.3.0-beta:

  • Gives you 3 "lives" - basically you are allowed to lose 3 times and still continue. You must still get 9 wins for a total victory.
  • Allows you to move your allies whenever you want, and removes the movement allower item and indulgence.

These changes are in response to the game feeling a bit too hard. 

In my biggest inspirations: Super Auto Pets and Hearthstone Battlegrounds, you are allowed to have multiple losses. This introduces a mechanic where you can knowingly take a loss in order to better your deck, which feels strategic. It also gives you a little bit of time to build up your synergies. For new players, you at least get to play a bit before you have to start over. I think dying on the first level over and over again is very demoralizing.

So far, finding the right difficulty has been the hardest part of the design process for this game, but I hope to keep tweaking it until it feels good.
